Dimitris A. Verganelakis Msc, PhD, PGCHE, Medical Phycisist, Athens (Greece)
Dr Verganelakis is a medical physicist specialized in Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). The technique of Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a unique non-invasive tool that allows scientists to observe-image in-vivo and in real time the human brain functioning! A variety of human functions, such as vision, speech, motion, memory, feelings etc have been studied and mapped. fMRI has been proven to de a useful tool in neurosurgery and in the medical research area of various pathophysiological conditions. In the former, it determines the prominent hemisphere (neurosurgery of epilepsy) and the spatial correlation between tumour and functional centers providing like this a minimum of post-operative disfunctioning; In the latter, it is applied in Alzheimer, psychology, etc. fMRI is a safe and accurate technique, with reproducibility. It is based on the phenomenon of magnetic resonsnce and brain blood oxygenation. Here, it is used in order to study a group of subjects addicted to smoking, before and after acupuncture during no-smoking periods.
